Introduction to Sheet Metal Processing Technology: Common Terms Used in Mechanical Engineering (Blanks)

Terms commonly used in mechanical engineering (blank)

**Commonly Used Terms** 'Guide Mark'... Refers to the marks created on the top or bottom surface of the workpiece by guides or strippers. Generally, if the pressing pressure is strong, a circular mark will appear, and if it is a single press, a crescent-shaped mark will appear. 'Burr'... Refers to the small curled parts that occur on the sheared edge of the workpiece. If they remain on areas that can be touched, they pose a risk of injury, so they need to be removed. 'Clearance'... Refers to the gap in the punch hole. If the clearance is excessive, twisting or deformation can occur in the punched area. Typically, a width of more than twice the thickness of steel or aluminum material, and more than four times for stainless steel, is required. 'Knockout'... A processing method where the workpiece is punched out to the thickness of the sheet, but a part is left connected to the base material. It should be designed for easy removal on-site as needed. A dedicated knockout die (usually round) is required. 'Dowel Projection'... Refers to the process of adding spherical protrusions to the workpiece. Nesting... Refers to the layout of sheet workpiece cutouts directed to NC processing machines via CAM.

[Sheet Metal Processing Example] Unloading Work of Punching and Laser (Blank) Process

In the context of processing cut materials primarily from fixed-length materials, the ingenuity to improve yield and efficiently utilize materials is becoming increasingly important.

Our blanking operations mainly involve cutting out from standard-sized materials, which requires disassembly work. By efficiently arranging the materials in order according to thickness during the CAM nesting stage, this disassembly work can be streamlined, making it easier to transition to the next bending process. Considering time shifts, we have arranged multiple operators, which has made the flow of the process smoother. Moving forward, we hope to further improve and streamline the process, including reducing material waste.

Nesting refers to the process of cutting material parts from standard-sized materials. Improving the efficiency of nesting is an important factor in terms of cost.

At our headquarters factory, which has two combined processing machines (laser and turret punch), we are currently working on more efficient production through innovative nesting techniques. By constructing diagrams between the combined machines, we expect to significantly enhance the effectiveness of our operations. With the involvement of the design department, we can categorize sheet thicknesses and create summaries, and we will aim for production rationalization by engaging in lot production tailored to personnel and equipment.

[Processing Example] Rivet Joining

Reforce aims for weld-free!

There are three advantages to using rivet joining. The first is that the working time is shorter compared to welding. The aspect of "speed," which is one of the strengths of Re-FORCE, will be further utilized as more tasks can be performed with rivet joining. The second is that the work is easier compared to welding. Since no qualifications like those required for welding are necessary, even beginners can perform tasks in a short amount of time. The third is cost. Rivet joining is inherently low in cost, and the cost performance improves as the size of the product increases, which is another key point.
